Why Do Some Fire Departments Ask For Donations?

It’s not like the TV shows where residents can walk into the firehouse, say hi to a few people, and get a bandage put on their leg by a fireman at the in-station clinic.

Since the Wurtsboro Fire Department is a volunteer organization, they are not 100% funded by the municipality. They need the help of the community whose property they protect and lives they save.

Firefighters themselves never accept personal rewards or gifts, but many times, an owner whose business was saved by the firefighters, or a family whose daughter was rescued from a life-threatening motor vehicle accident, feels compelled to make a donation to the firefighting cause. Other times, there are just calls from people in the community, especially around the holidays, that simply want to know how and where to make a donation.
